U.S. Vice President to Visit Hungary Ahead of Elections

U.S. Vice President JD Vance will travel to Hungary next week and meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, offering Washington's support to the leader just days ahead of parliamentary elections. The trip, confirmed by the White House on Thursday, will take place on April 7 and 8. Vance is also expected to give a speech on the 'important alliance between the U.S. and Hungary'. The ultranationalist Orbán, in power since 2010, is a staunch ally and defender of Donald Trump and has received the U.S. leader's explicit support in the past and now, ahead of elections where the opposition Tisza party is projected to be strong in polls. Last week, Trump called on Hungarian citizens to 'go out and vote for Orbán,' who said he has his 'total and complete support for re-election'. 'He is a truly strong and powerful leader,' the American wrote in a post on the X platform. Vance's visit to Hungary comes less than two months after Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit in mid-February, where an agreement on cooperation in civil nuclear energy was signed. Hungarians will go to the polls on April 12, and the Tisza party, led by conservative Péter Magyar, has the support of 56% of citizens, while Orbán's Fidesz party would receive 37% of the votes, according to a survey published yesterday by the 21 Research Center.
